A natural stone or boulder retaining wall over about 4 ft (1.2 m) of exposed height must be engineered. A dry-stacked wall is a gravity wall — it stays up on its own mass and base width, which have to be checked against overturning, sliding and bearing pressure for your soil. This calculator performs none of those checks; the base-width band here is a planning rule of thumb only. Any wall with a slope, driveway, pool or foundation loading it from above needs a designed wall and almost certainly a permit and inspection, whatever its height. Stone is sold by the ton, and a wall is deeper than it looks

The mistake that busts a stone-wall budget is estimating from the face you see. A wall you can picture as 20 ft long and 3 ft high is really a battered mass of rock two feet thick at the base and half a foot into the ground — and the yard sells it to you by weight, not by the square foot. This calculator works from the wall's volume and the density your stone actually packs to, which is the number that turns cubic feet into the tons on your invoice. On the defaults that comes out near 8 tons, and it is why a stone wall of the same height as a block wall lands in a different price bracket.

Wall stone at $180 per ton delivered sits in the middle of a wide 2026 US picture: retaining-wall and building stone runs roughly $60–550 per ton for materials depending on type, with rounded landscape boulders averaging $120–350 per ton and shaped or specialty granite reaching far higher. Local fieldstone is the cheap end; anything quarried, shaped or hauled a distance is not — so this is the one default most worth replacing with a real quote from your yard. Delivery at $8 per ton reflects the common $5–10 per ton haul charge; on heavy stone it is a real line, and it is why buying local matters. The placed density of 1.8 tons per cubic yard for fitted dry-stack wall stone is about 15 cubic feet of finished wall per ton, consistent with stone-yard coverage tables; looser random fieldstone and rounded boulders pack nearer 1.5–1.6, which the stone-type selector sets for you. Base and drain rock at $45 per ton, pipe and fabric use the same defaults as our other retaining-wall tools so the numbers stay comparable across materials.

How many tons of stone do I need for a retaining wall?

It comes from the wall's volume, not just its face. A dry-stacked wall is roughly half as thick as it is tall, so the default 20 ft wall 3 ft high works out near 8 tons — a base course about 24 in deep tapering to 12 in at the top, at about 1.8 tons per cubic yard placed. That placed figure already includes the gaps between stones, which is what a stone yard's coverage means, so order to the ton and keep the waste allowance for breakage on top of it.

How thick should a stone retaining wall be?

A dry-stacked wall holds the soil back by its own weight, so the base needs to be about half the total height at a minimum — 50 to 70 percent is the band this tool checks. Build it battered, wider at the bottom than the top, so every course leans back into the slope. Thin walls stacked plumb are the ones that bulge and come down.

How deep should the bottom course be buried?

Set the first course below grade so the wall cannot kick out at the base — commonly about one eighth of the wall height, and never less than a full stone deep. The calculator adds that buried course to the exposed height and carries the total through every quantity, because you pay for the stone underground too.

Do I need drainage behind a dry-stacked stone wall?

A dry-stacked wall drains through its own joints far better than block or poured concrete, but the soil behind it still needs somewhere for water to go. A column of drain rock, a perforated pipe that daylights and filter fabric to keep the fines out are the standard package — size the rock and pipe in the drainage calculator.

Is a natural stone wall cheaper than block?

Rarely in labour, sometimes in materials. Installed natural stone runs about $45–90 per square foot against $30–60 for segmental block, because fitting irregular stone is slow, skilled work. The stone itself is anywhere from $60 to $550 a ton depending on type, so a local fieldstone can undercut engineered block on materials while shaped granite will not.
